Beyond The Ballot: Ten Years of Brexit

On Tuesday 23 June, 2026, a decade to the day since the EU Referendum, Political Education For Students hosts our exclusive Brexit Conference. You can find out more below.

Beyond The Ballot: Ten Years of Brexit | Tuesday 23 June | St. Helen's School, London.

It has been exactly one decade since the 2016 Referendum shook the foundations of British life. What began as a single vote triggered ten years of seismic political, economic, and cultural repercussions that continue to shape our world today..

The decision to leave the EU stands as the most significant constitutional event of the 21st century. But as we reach this 10-year milestone, the conversation has moved beyond the ballot box. We are now living in the "long Brexit"—navigating a world of shifting trade deals, new borders, and a transforming national identity.

We aren’t just reading about history; we’re inviting the people who helped to wroie it. This conference brings together a superb panel of speakers to help you make sense of the chaos: politicians, political candidates, econommics, journalists, historians, academics and strategic thinkiners,

This isn't just another lecture; it is a front-row seat to the debate defining your generation’s future.

Take your A Levels out of the textbook and into the real world, ask questions of expert speakers, build up your UCAS application and connect with likeminded people..

Meet The Speakers

Satvir Kaur MP

Member of Parliament & Minister of State in the Cabinet Office

Satvir is a central figure in the UK government, serving as a Minister of State with responsibility for the core operations of the British state. Following a career as the Leader of Southampton Council—one of the UK’s largest local authorities—she entered Parliament during the 2024 landslide. A fierce advocate for her home city and its future, Satvir offers a unique perspective on the mechanics of power, the reality of the 2024 political shift, and the challenge of governing a nation a decade on from the EU referendum.

Hannah Fearn

Journalist, Commentator & Broadcaster

Hannah is a leading voice in British social affairs, frequently heard deconstructing the week's chaos on the hit politics podcast “Oh God, What Now?” As the former Comment Editor of The Independent, she was at the heart of the national conversation, commissioning the influential ‘Final Say’ second referendum campaign. From The Guardian to The i Paper, Hannah’s reporting cuts through the noise of Westminster, offering a sharp, fearless perspective on how a decade of post-referendum politics has reshaped our society.

Dr. Max Stafford

Political Scientist & Former Government Advisor

Max operates at the intersection of political theory and front-line practice. A former advisor to two Cabinet Ministers and several MPs, he now shapes the next generation of thinkers as a Lecturer at the University of Southampton. An expert in global political leadership, Max’s latest work, “Strong Mayors' Leadership Capital”, dissects power in New York and London, while his upcoming books go behind the scenes of the Downing Street Chief-of-Staff. He brings a rare, combined perspective as an insider and academic to how leadership has evolved in post-referendum Britain.

Dr. Suzanne Bartington

Former Parliamentary Candidate, Remain Campaigner & Environmental Policy Expert

Suzanne offers a rare "insider’s view" of the political and legislative shifts triggered by the EU referendum. A prominent Remain campaigner alongside David Cameron, she was selected  as a Conservative Parliamentary candidate during the pivotal 2017 "Brexit Election." Having served as an Conservaitve Oxfordshire County Councillor until 2021, Suzanne witnessed first-hand the ideological evolution of the Conservative Party as it pivoted toward a new national identity. Today, as a UKRI Regional Clean Air Champion at the University of Birmingham, she leads the charge in the age of Brexit policy-making—transforming scientific research into the new, independent UK environmental regulations that replaced EU directives.

Andrew Threadgould

Economist, Author & Researcher

With over 30 years at the sharp end of elite education—most recently as Deputy Head at Dulwich College—Andrew is a master at translating complex market shifts into clear, compelling narratives. A prolific author of A Level Economics textbooks and a regular contributor to Economics Today, his current research at Birkbeck explores the seismic intersections of history and money. From the Great Depression to the impact of Brexit, Andrew reveals how economic theories move from the page to the real world, shaping every aspect of our lives.

Teresa Song

Founder of Nova Scholars & Strategic Consultant

A former Morgan Stanley investment banker and LSE alumna, Teresa specialises in the science of high-stakes decision-making. Through her consultancy, Nova Scholars, which supports students and families, she breaks down complex frameworks for navigating risk, chaos, and uncertainty. By applying her proprietary "Decision-Making Under Uncertainty" model to the Brexit era, Teresa empowers students to see the hidden patterns in political events—equipping them with the strategic tools to navigate a world where the old rules no longer apply.
