Before setting up Political Education For Students, James Nichols – the Director – was the Assistant Principal at his “outstanding” school responsible for more able, gifted and talented students. Before that, for five years he was the leader of more able provision, the Extended Project Qualification and Oxbridge candidates in another large “outstanding” school. In both schools, he had the strategic and daily responsibility of inspiring and motivating students to successfully apply to Oxford, Cambridge and other elite universities. As such, when it came to setting up his new organisation, he wanted to continue to use his experiences and passion to help gifted students.
He was aided by his Masters in Education that specialised in the provision for gifted and more able students and in particular, how to encourage more gifted students to believe in Oxbridge as a viable future choice. He was fortunate that in this roles he had already established extensive experience and knowledge of Oxbridge admissions, had worked with admissions tutors and outreach programmes, knew contacts at both universities and knew the cities well himself. He was well placed to support the students at his schools.
As such, Political Education For Students have created two Oxbridge workshops for gifted students. One of these, “Oxbridge Aspirations” is for future candidates currently studying for their GCSEs and the other workshop is “Oxbridge and Russell Group Interview Skills” for those in Post-16 who have or are about to apply. At PEFS, we believe firmly that with early planning and structured support, we can give students – regardless of social or economic background – the attention and support that they need to feel confident and succeed in their application.
